Hello! My name is Christos Taltsidis, and I am the only authentic master furrier in the Chicagoland area, making me the” Last of the Mohicans.”
Retailers who only sell fur, and do not know how to actually make a fur coat, are not furriers. I make fur garments in my store. The average fur coat requires approximately 9,000 stitches and precise cutting of expensive pelts – it is very labor-intensive. Most fur coats carried in stores now are manufactured overseas with inferior pelts. That is why they do not drape correctly. A custom-made fur will fit like a glove and last for when properly cared for.
I started art of fur creations in Kastoria*, Greece, known as the fur capitol of the world. There are several theories about the origin of the name Kastoria. It is believed that the name derives from the Greek word κάστορας (kástoras, meaning “beaver”). Trade in the animal’s fur, sourced from nearby Lake Orestiada, where a lot of beavers, has traditionally been an important element of the city’s economy.
At the age of 12 I already knew that I wanted to be a furrier and to make impressive, original, creative garments for men and women. To create a custom garment requires taking the concept, creating a sketch and carefully measured pattern, then using time honored techniques to produce a masterpiece that will suit your personal needs.
When I came to US at the age of 16, I worked for many of the leading furriers in the Chicagoland area. Nordstrom, Evans Furrier, Maple Furrier, Mysel Furs, Abrahamson Furs are but a few of the well-known craftsmen which I worked with.
I represent the knowledge and history of all Chicagoland’s furriers for the last 30 year. My extensive experience with the alteration, design, cleaning, and care of fur, leather & shearling garments, means that I can create or restore any garment that you desire. Besides my practical experience, I also graduated from the Chicago Fur Association with a degree in patterns and fittings.
I take pride in what I do, from the smallest project to the largest. I surround myself with people who know and love fur, and we continue to pursue the craftsmanship of fur, leather and shearling art.
